Week 2 Update

This week I toured YAME Nails and Spa and talked with a few nail technicians on the different nail applciation techinques. I also talked with the owner, Man, about where he purchases supplies, the different services he offers, and on what it takes to be a nail technician.

After my visit and after watching several youtube tutorials, I attempted my own set of acrylic nails. I decided to try and replicated these nails that I found on Pinterest:

I think they eventually turned out pretty good, but I definitely encountered challenges along the way. I actually had to redo an entire hand because I didn't let the base polish dry for long enough, so when I went to create the blue and white design on top, the entire nail smeared.

I also bought some polygel and attempted to create a nail but each time I would press down and try to cure the gel, the nail form would get stuck. The portion of the gel attached to my real nail also always turned out too thin and flimsy. In the following weeks, I will have to watch a few more videos to get the hang of this application type.

I plan on going back to YAME Nails and Spa and asking the nail technicians for tips on how to apply polygel nails.

  1. Your efforts are impressive! Your nails look very profesh. :) I've also heard about dips and powders - are those somehow related to the techniques you are using too?

    1. Hi Blythe! Thanks for reading my blog! Yep, the nails that I created involved using acrylic powder and a monomer (which is the liquid that sort of "activates" the powder).

  2. Wow Emma - I had no idea that there was so much complexity in doing nail art! How long did it take you to finally perfect your look (above)? I love that blue color! How long do you keep a particular look? I would imagine that after you've put all that time and effort in, I wouldn't want to clean it all off and start over.

    1. Hi Kym! Thanks for reading my blog! That nail look took around 3-4 hours (I think as I get more comfortable with using acrylics the application time should decrease haha). That nail look also involved a lot of filing/drilling to get the right shape which also took a super long time. This nail look actually only lasted me around 5 days (I accidentally broke one nail and chipped another) which is quite odd since a set of acrylics will usually last a lot longer.
